Towards Machine Equivalent Consciousness

چکیده

Alan Turing’s fundamental inquiry asking “Can Machines think?” has given rise to a wide variety of contrasting approaches to building intelligent machines. Thinking requires that a computer must know what it processes and form conscious about meaningful concepts based on which subjective mental activities (e.g. seeing, knowing, learning, judging, evaluating, deciding, reasoning, etc.) can be carried on. However, a modern computer runs trillions of operations per second and is capable of performing complex computation, but still lack selfawareness—a basic element for thinking. So, how can a machine gain conscious awareness from bits of electronic signals it processes? This article explores whether generating self-awareness is possible through a mechanical procedure. Specifically, we examine patterns of human perception to identify a) what happens in the course of receiving external information and what the outputs that each sense produces are; b) how such outputs are bound into a meaningful concept; and c) the nature of self-awareness. Our research suggests that conscious awareness is a perceived pattern of physical energy. We show that the process of gaining awareness can be simulated and mechanized.

Towards autonomous embedded systems

Machines incorporating embedded systems display a trend towards increasing autonomy. In this position paper, we outline an approach for introducing autonomy in embedded system architectures. The approach involves the creation of an artificial consciousness within the machine. We propose that the artificial consciousness may be represented in the form of domain specific reference architectures. ...

The Computational Explanatory Gap January 2014

Efforts to study consciousness using computational models over the last two decades have received a decidedly mixed reception. Investigators in mainstream AI have largely ignored this work, and some members of the philosophy community have argued that the whole endeavor is futile. Here we suggest that very substantial progress has been made, to the point where the use of computational simulatio...

Bootstrapping a Structured Self-improving & Safe Autopoietic Self

After nearly sixty years of failing to program artificial intelligence (AI), it is now time to grow it using an enactive approach instead. Critically, however, we need to ensure that it matures with a “moral sense” that will ensure the safety and well-being of the human race. Implementing consciousness and conscience is the next step the way towards creating safe and cooperative machine entities.

Towards The Adoption of a Perception-Driven Perspective in the Design of Complex Robotic Systems

Awareness and autonomous interaction with the environment in a robotic system is the base of the new discipline of machine consciousness. In this paper we present the results of a first attempt in order to engineer these robotic systems by applying a Situational Method Engineering approach that extends PASSI and to create a model for conscious systems.
